On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will take place in Iceland. During the eclipse, the Moon will completely pass in front of the Sun, blocking it from view for a short time. During this time, even the solar corona - the Sun’s glowing outer atmosphere - will become visible.
The solar eclipse will be visible primarily in western Iceland. The path of totality runs through the Westfjords, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and the Reykjanes Peninsula, among other areas. The total solar eclipse will also be visible in Reykjavík.
For a short time, it will become unusually dark in the middle of the day, and the landscape will appear bathed in a very special light. A total solar eclipse is a rare event. The next total solar eclipse visible from Iceland will not occur until the year 2196.
