Reyjkavik Marathon - Running Through the World´s Northernmost Capital
The Reyjkavik Marathon has been held every August since 1984 and is one of Iceland´s most popular running events. The varied routes take runners past the city´s most famous landmarks, along the coast, and through lush parks. Whether it´s a marathon, half-marathon, or shorter distances - both ambitious runners and recreational runners will find the right challenge.
The atmosphere along the route is particularly charming: spectators cheer on the participants with music, a great vibe, and typical Icelandic hospitality. Since the marathon takes place at the same time as a Culture Night, there´s a lively, festive atmosphere throughout the entire city center.
Culture Night (Menningarnott) - Reyjkavik Celebrates Its Birthday
Culture Night, known as Menningarnott in Icelandic, is Reykjavik´s largest city festival and commemorates the granting of city rights in 1786. Since its inception in 1996, it has become one of Iceland´s most important cultural events. The entire downtown area becomes a stage for music, art, theater, dance, street performers, and numerous hands-on activities.
What makes it special: Most events are free and invite visitors to experience Reyjkavik from a whole new perspective. Museums, galleries, and cultural institutions open their doors, while concerts and performances fill the streets with life. The grand finale is traditionally a spectacular firework display over the city.
