On the Icelandic National Day, locals celebrate the foundation of The Republic of Iceland on the 17th of June in 1944. The date was also chosen to mark Iceland’s independence from Denmark, gained in 1944 as well.

In addition, the 17th of June is the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, too. He is a national hero, who fought for his country’s independence and was the leader of the 19th-century Icelandic independence movement.

Icelanders love to celebrate their national day and spend time with their families and friends. The day begins with a service and a public memorial, followed by a speech given by the Icelandic president. There is a big parade in Reykjavik, including a brass band and lots of fun things to do for kids, like jumping castles and games to play. Visitors and locals can also enjoy concerts, dance groups, and more cultural entertainment. People gather with family and friends to enjoy picnics and more.

We congratulate the Icelanders and wish them a happy holiday!
