In the remote north-east of Iceland, this riding tour offers an incomparable adventure in autumn. The tour on the Melrakkasletta peninsula leads along the Oxafjordur fjord with marvelous views of the mountain range. The participants support the local farmers as they drive the sheep down from the mountains - a fantastic experience! At no other time is it possible to combine Icelandic culture and tradition with a challenging and fascinating riding tour. Shared room with made-up beds.
Domestic flight from Reykjavik to Husavik. Bus transfer to Bjarnastadir farm with a stop at Dettifoss waterfall and the legendary Asbyrgi gorge. After lunch, there will be a short introduction to Icelandic riding. The riding tour (2-3 hours) then starts through the area around the Kerlingarskogur forest with magnificent views of the Oxarfjordur fjord and Lake Skjalftavatn. (approx. 18 miles)
Early in the morning, we meet a local farmer and his dog, who will be on hand to help and advise us during the drive. Today we ride through an area characterised by its rich vegetation and many small lakes. In the late afternoon, we leave the sheep and our horses at an abandoned mountain hut and drive to the farm to relax over a hearty dinner. (approx. 22 miles)
The north coast of the Melrakkasletta peninsula almost touches the Arctic Circle and is a paradise for birdwatchers and geology enthusiasts. This is where the North American and Eurasian plates are drifting apart. The participants drive the sheep to Katastadarettpferch on horseback. Return and overnight stay at Bjarnastadir farm. (approx. 18 miles)
The big day of the sheep round-up! We help the farmers sort the sheep. Afterwards, we sing together. For many Icelanders in the countryside, this day is the highlight of the year, as many family members come together to celebrate. We return to Bjarnastadir farm for dinner (approx. 22 miles)
Departure and transfer to Husavik. Optionally, you can take part in a whale-watching tour. Return flight to Reykjavik in the afternoon.
Suitable for:
Experienced riders: Can easily control the horse in all gaits, sit securely in the saddle and feel comfortable in the saddle for up to 7 hours a day. They are able to ride at a fast pace over uneven terrain and up and down slopes.
