Horseback Riding Horse Round up in Northwest Iceland

Join the farmers on this great autumn adventure and take part in the rounding up of the herd, the sorting of the horses, and the celebrations after a happy homecoming for horses and humans. The terrain is varied, with high moors, green valleys now turning autumnal yellows and reds, blue lakes, and rivers. Only in the north of Iceland are traditional horse drives still organized today. Our departure in mid-September takes the horses to the Skrapatungurett pen and in October to the Vididalstungurett pen. In both places, a dance event "Rettardansleikur" is held in the nearest community center to celebrate the day. Farmers and their friends take part in the event and sing and dance all night (admission is not included in the price). After traveling by plane, you will spend a night in the greater Reykjavik area. From our riding center in Hafnarfjordur, you will have the opportunity to prepare for the next few days with a horse ride. The next four riding days are spent in the north before the trip ends with another night in the Reykjavik area.

From Hvammur farm we ride through beautiful valleys and past mountains to the Laxardalur valley. Here we become one with the Icelanders and help to drive the free-roaming horses down from the mountains to the Skrapatungurett pen. After the work is done, we celebrate the day with a dance event "Rettardansleikur" in the nearest community center, and those who wish can celebrate with the Icelanders. The next day, the round-up continues and the horses are sorted in the pen. We then help to drive some of the horses home. After the riding tour, we returned to Reykjavik, where we spent one last night before departure.

From Bjargsholl farm in the north, we follow good riding routes until we meet the Icelanders who have been rounding up horses in the highlands for a few days. We help to drive the horses to the Vididalstungurett pen. After the work is done, we celebrate the day with a dance event "Rettardansleikur" in the nearest community center, and those who wish can celebrate with the Icelanders. The next day, the round-up continues and the horses are sorted in the pen. Experience the excitement of horse and man as the animals are sorted from the herd and allocated to their rightful owner. We then return to the greater Reykjavik area, where one last night is spent before traveling home.
