The Fishing ground

Westfjords

Iceland's abundance of fish is mainly due to the special current conditions that prevail along the Westfjords. On its way from the Mexican coast, the warm Gulf Stream splits into three undercurrents at a ridge between Scotland and Iceland: the North Atlantic Current, the Norwegian Current and the Irminger Current. The latter transports comparatively warm water to Iceland's northwest coast. Here, the water masses meet the ice-cold tides of the East Greenland Current, which picks up and carries unimaginable amounts of micro-food from the Arctic Ocean on its way. These conditions are unique. Combined with the practically unpolluted waters and a sustainable fishing policy of the Icelanders, this leads to the gigantic abundance of fish off the northern Westfjords.

Fish

Cabin boats for sea angling in Iceland

Our fishermen stay in our 3 bedroom cottages and flats that can accommodate up to 6 persons. The most usual and comfortable thing is for 4 persons to share a house and a boat. Fishing is from the 8 m offshore cabin boats with sea angling rods 20 - 50 lbs and strong reels with braided line, pilkers of approx 400-700 g, rubber fish of 20-30 cm and 300-500 g, and living bait as mackerel or octopus, which the guides always have available. The average fishing depth is 30-60 m, mostly sandy bottom, some shells, and almost no stones or rocks. The most common catch is Cod (up to 30 kg), Haddock (up to 6 pack), Wolf-fish (up to 12 kg), Monkfish (up to more than 20 kg), and even the Atlantic Halibut (up to 250 cm and more than 200 kg!). A 20 kg mixture of four different types of luxury frozen fish fillets is available in cooler bags for you to take home.

Bait

Fishing pole

With stronger drift, fishing with large rubber fish such as Storm, Royber Jig, Cut Bait Herring and Giant Jig Head is very successful, as these lures then have a very tempting game. Pilkers often have an advantage when there is little drift or when the water is still. Don't just fish exclusively on the bottom or near the bottom. Very often, the large cod and halibut in particular are a few meters above the bottom, even up to mid-water. Therefore, fish these depth zones systematically and you will certainly be successful.
