In Thingvellir National Park, the world's first democratic parliament was elected in 930. The plain lies in a geologically very interesting area. Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is the place where the drifting apart of the American and Eurasian continental plates can be clearly seen.
The landscape in the National Park is characterized by volcanic formations, clear glacial rivers and picturesque lakes. The country's largest lake, Thingvallavatn, is located in the park and is a popular destination for anglers. The national park is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Mosses, lichens and shrubs cover the lava fields, while the lake and surrounding areas provide a habitat for numerous bird species.
A visit to the geyser area is a must for every visitor to Iceland. This region, known as Haukadalur, is one of the country's most impressive geothermal areas. It is located in the southwest of Iceland along the popular "Golden Circle" route. Here, you can find the famous Great Geyser, which gave its name to geysers around the world. Although it erupts only rarely, its smaller neighbor, Strokkur, regularly delights visitors with water fountains that shoot up to 20 meters into the air every 5 to 10 minutes.
The surrounding landscape is characterized by steaming springs, bubbling mud pots, and colorful mineral deposits. This area is a fascinating example of Iceland's volcanic activity and attracts thousands of visitors each year who want to experience the power of nature up close.
Gullfoss is one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls and a highlight of the renowned "Golden Circle" route. Located in the southwest of the country on the Hvita River, which is fed by the Langjokull glacier, the waterfall features two impressive cascades: the upper cascade plunges 11 meters, while the lower cascade drops 21 meters into a deep, narrow gorge.
Gullfoss is particularly breathtaking in the summer when rainbows can be seen dancing over the rising water spray.
In addition to being a natural wonder, Gullfoss serves as a symbol of environmental protection in Iceland. In the early 20th century, efforts to save it from energy production initiatives allowed it to be preserved as a protected natural monument to this day.
