After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we will meet our tour guide in the hotel lobby to start our adventure. Our first stop will be at the Northern Lights Center Aurora Reykjavik, where we will learn about the Northern Lights and receive tips on photographing them. Next, we'll visit the stunning Gullfoss waterfall, which is especially breathtaking in winter when the water is frozen.
We will then explore the geyser area and witness the spectacular Strokkur geyser shooting water into the air. Following this memorable experience, we'll travel along the coast to the south, making stops at the famous waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss before reaching the black beaches of the south coast.
We'll conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay in the small town of Vik. If the weather permits, our guide will lead us on a northern lights hunt in the evening.
We start our day with breakfast at the hotel before heading to the impressive Vatnajokull National Park in South Iceland. This park is one of the largest national parks in Western Europe and covers around 13% of Iceland.
Our first stop is the Skaftafell region, known for its unique nature and majestic glaciers. After exploring Skaftafell, we make our way to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where we can enjoy the breathtaking view of the numerous icebergs floating in the water. With a bit of luck, we might even spot a seal taking a nap on one of the ice floes. Adjacent to the glacier lagoon is Breidamerkursandur, also known as Diamond Beach.
We'll end the day with dinner and an overnight stay in Southeast Iceland or the Höfn region.
After a filling breakfast at the hotel, we drove through the stunning Almannaskard Pass and made a brief stop to take photos. The eastern fjords provided a dramatic backdrop of towering mountains that descended sharply into the sea. Along the way, we had the opportunity to spot migrating reindeer, which travel from the highlands to the East Fjords in winter.
We passed several picturesque villages before arriving in Breidalsvik, where we visited the local Beljandi microbrewery for a beer tasting. Following that, we continued our drive to Egilsstadir, where we enjoyed dinner and stayed for the night.
Today, after breakfast, we explore the endless expanses of the Modrudalsoraefi highland plateau before heading towards Lake Myvatn. On the way, we make a stop (weather and road conditions permitting) at Dettifoss waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe.
We then drive to the Namaskard Pass with its bubbling mud puddles and bright colors. Arriving at Lake Myvatn, we explore the unique, beautiful landscape, including the pseudo-crater at Skutustadir and the salmon river Laxa. Dinner and overnight in the Myvatn region.
Optionally, you can book an excursion to the Mývatn Nature Bath.
We started our day with breakfast at the hotel before heading out to explore the extraordinary lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Local legends say that elves reside in these rocks, which resemble structures created by fantasy creatures. Following our visit, we made our way to Godafoss waterfall, one of the most renowned attractions in northern Iceland. The frozen waterfall left us in awe.
Next, we continued our journey to Akureyri, the capital of the north, where we took in the sight of charming buildings before driving along coastal roads to the Troll Peninsula. The drive treated us to stunning views of steep mountains and black sand beaches alongside the Arctic Sea.
We paused in the small town of Siglufjöodur in the fjord of the same name to visit the famous Herring-Era Maritime Museum. After our visit, we headed to Skagafjordur, a region known for breeding Icelandic horses, where we enjoyed dinner and spent the night in Northwest Iceland.
After breakfast today, we will have the opportunity to experience the unique Icelandic horses and their special gait, the tolt. Horses have played an important role in Icelandic history and continue to be significant today. Later, we will drive to the village of Blonduos and cross the Holtavorduheidi plateau, taking us to West Iceland.
Along the way, we will pass through Borgarfjordur, a region known for its diverse landscape and Viking heritage, before spending the night in the Borgarnes region.
Today, we will be exploring some of the unique natural sights in West Iceland. After breakfast, we will head to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe. We will then visit the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfall and the nearby Barnafoss waterfall, where the bright blue color contrasts sharply with the black lava rocks.
Driving through the unique landscape, we will pass snow-covered mountains and the Hvalfjördur fjord to reach Lake Thingvallavatn, the largest lake in Iceland. This lake is situated in Thingvellir National Park in the southwest of the country, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to the Althingi, the oldest parliament in the world, and is also the location where the European and North American tectonic plates meet. Visitors can even walk between the plates.
We will then drive back to Reykjavik, where our guide will bid us farewell. Dinner will be on your own.
With many unique experiences in mind, it's time to say goodbye to the land of fire and ice. A shuttle will take you from the hotel to Keflavik Airport, from where you will start your journey home. Depending on flight times you can spend the morning in Reykjavik or visit the Blue Lagoon on your way to the airport.
