After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we meet our guide for this adventure! We start with a quick Reykjavik tour before exploring the volcanic landscapes of Reykjanes, a UNESCO GeoPark. We will see craters, lava cliffs, and Kleifarvatn featured in The Draining Lake, Arnaldur Indridason’s suspense novel. Next, we will visit the Krysuvik geothermal area, with its bubbling mud pools and steam vents, before driving along the scenic coast to Strandarkirkja, a historic seafarers’ church. Our journey continues to the Thingvellir National Park, the site of the world’s first parliament and the continental drift between tectonic plates.
Dinner and overnight in the Golden Circle area.
We start the day after breakfast with the impressive geyser area. Geysit Strokkur is the most active of them and shoots a jet of water upwards every few minutes. We continue to one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls: the two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. We then set off on the historic Kjolur highland route towards North Iceland. On this adventurous drive, we see glaciers and the untouched wilderness of the mystical highlands. In the highlands, we make a stop at the Hveravellir geothermal area. On easy hiking trails, we can admire the colorful landscape with the steam vents. Our destination today is Akureyri, also known as the capital of the north.
Today, after breakfast at the hotel, we explore the breathtaking Myvatn area. We visit the impressive Godafoss waterfall before continuing into the nature reserve. The Myvatn area is known for its extraordinary landscape and diverse birdlife. We have the opportunity to hike to the pseudocraters at Skutustadir, visit the Dark Lava Citadeles of Dimmuborgir, and admire the colorful geothermal slopes of Manaskard. On our return to Akureyri, we can end the evening with a relaxing swim in the Forest Lagoon,
We have breakfast at the hotel before we leave Akureyri and drive to the charming little town of Husavik. Here we take one of the traditional fishing boats into Skjalfandi Bay and look out for whales, dolphins, and seabirds. We then drive along the edge of the Arctic Circle to the northern edge of Vatnajokull National Park. We visit the horseshoe-shaped gorge Asbyrgi and the troll-like rock Hljodaklettar. The crowning glory of today is a visit to Dettifoss, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. Dinner and overnight stay in the Myvatn area.
After breakfast, we drive to the beautiful East Fjords of the country. We cross the Modrudalsoraefi desert plateau, visit the fascinating Studlagil Canyon with its turquoise waters, and drive to the region's capital, Egilsstadir. Dinner and overnight stay in the East Fjord region.
We have breakfast at the hotel and continue through the unique landscape of the East Fjords. The further we drive towards South Iceland, the better we can see Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull, on the horizon. We drive to the famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where we go on a boat tour across the lagoon. With some luck, we might spot a seal or two resting on the ice floes. Next to the glacier lagoon is Diamond Beach, which has become a popular photo motif in recent years. We continue our journey towards Skaftafell, a green oasis surrounded by mountains and glaciers. Dinner and overnight stay in the Kirkjubaejarklaustur region.
After breakfast at the hotel, we see a different side of the highlands today, namely the colorful southern wilderness. Our journey takes us along the Fjallabaksleid highland road through several rivers to the Landmannalaugar area, which is known for its colorful rhyolite mountains.
